Billabong cierra con este evento un año de sponsorizaciones de otros eventos del circuito como el Billabong Pro Tahiti en la Polinesia Francesa, Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay en Sud·frica y el Billabong Pro Santa Catarina en Brazil.

EL pasado campeón del mundo en 1978, y actual presidente de la ASP (Asociación Surfistas Profesionales) Wayne Bartholomew comentaba:

“Pipe es la escena y juego más importante y el Pipe Masters es el tÌtulo más prestigioso del Tour”. ìBillabong trae su riqueza en técnica al icono del North Shore, y este acuerdo personifica el concepto del “Dream Tour”.

El Billabong Pipe masters es la última prueba del circuito mundial y a su vez forma parte del Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, que lo constituyen 3 eventos hawaianos, siendo este último el Billabong Pipeline Masters.

Billabong ha tenido un buen y largo impacto en la trayectoria profesional de surfing en el North Shore de Hawaii. Cuando el tour estaba pasando un mala racha durante los años 80, la compaÒÌa de surf anuncio la celebración del Billabong pro. Los premios aumentaron considerablemente existiendo un evento móvil desde Waimea hasta Sunset, con este formato se consiguiÛ el evento con las olas más impresionantes nunca vistas en la historia de la competición de la ASP.

The Pipe Masters was founded in 1971 by Hawaiian Fred Hemmings, (now a Hawaii State Senator) who is credited with developing Hawaii’s fledgling professional surfing scene. Contest Director Randy Rarick, who eventually took it over from Hemmings, still runs the event and has been it’s inspiration for over three decades.
Although Jeff Hakman won the inaugural competition, fellow Hawaiian Gerry
Lopez was riding the wave with such a casual elegance that the contest was
later named after him (Lopez was not present in 1971 having been duped by the crafty Corky Carroll into thinking the event had been cancelled). In 1972 and1973 Lopez won the event with a display of surfing so beautiful that it caused Jim McKay, the legendary ABC announcer, to wipe tears from his eyes … on air.

To the surfing world, a Pipe Masters title is the pinnacle of the
sport; an honored achievement that sets a surfer in a special elite class. Entire careers have been spawned out of riding the Pipeline. Surfers from dozens of countries travel here to prove their ability in the caverns of Pipe. Make your mark on this wave and go down in surfing lore.

The “Masters” stature grew quickly as the NY Times declared a huge day in the early years as “A day of days on earth.” Sports Illustrated published a cover story in 1982 called Thunder from the Seas. ABC’s Wide World of Sports featured the event for nearly a decade.

Pipeis held by many with as much reverence as the World Title itself. The history of the place, combined with the sheer ferocity of the wave, makes winning the Pipe Masters a career highlight. Great rivalries in the sport have had their most intense matches here, from the Mark Richards/Cheyne Horan duels of the early Eighties to the fiery clashes of Tom Curren/Mark Occhilupo and the all-time battles between World Champs Andy Irons and Kelly Slater for the last decade.

Although hosted by a slew of major brands over the years, the WCT event at Pipe was taken over by Billabong in 2007, promising to make it the premier Hawaiian event. This year is expected to be a banner season for surf on the North Shore, promising a spectacular experience for both spectator and contestant alike.

The world of surfing mourns an incredibly sad loss today with the news that Hawaii’s Andy Irons has died. Andy was a beloved husband, and a true champion.

Irons, 32, withdrew from a professional surfing event in Puerto Rico last weekend due to illness, and passed away during a layover en-route to his home in Kauai, Hawaii. He had reportedly been battling with Dengue Fever, a viral disease.

At this time the family thanks his friends and fans for their support, and asks that the community respect its privacy. The family also asks to not be contacted so their focus can remain on one another during this time of profound loss.

El Rip Curl Pro Search en Puerto rico se pospone oficialmente la competición hasta el viernes en consecuencia de la trágica pérdida de Andy Irons.

Andy Irons, llegó a la final junto con el norteamericano y también campeón del mundo en el 2001, CJ Hobgood. El hawaiano natural de la isla de Kauai no conseguía una victoria en un WCT desde el año 2007, sin embargo ésta en Tahiti se convertía en su victoria número 20 de su carrera. Irons se coloca de este modo en cabeza del ranking mundial, en 7ª posición.

Durante la final, CJ Hobgood no pudo conseguir unos buenos tubos que eran necesarios para ganar al hawaiano Irons. Este ultimo tenía una buena combinación de 14.67 de un posible 20, mientras que Hobgood sólo pudo conseguir una maximo de 8.33.

Una de las mangas más emocionantes fue en semifinales, donde Andy Irons tuvo que enfrentarse en manga contra su eterno rival, el 9 veces campeón del mundo Kelly Slater. Irons ganó al de florida gracias a sus dos mejores olas consiguiendo un 13.57 de 20, mientras que Kelly se quedo a menos de 4 puntos de diferencia ( 10.26 de 20).

El francés Jeremy Flores, de 22 años consiguió llegar a semifinales, pero quedó eliminado por CJ Hobgood. Flores acabando en 3ª posición del Billabong Pro Tahiti. Ahora el joven Jeremy ha consguido sumar puntos gracias a este resultado y se coloca en el numero 19 del ranking mundial.

Adrian “Ace” Buchan fue al australiano que más alto llegó en este evento quedando en 5ª posición después de perder en cuartos de final contra el norteamericano Kelly Slater.

El portugués del equipo Bilalbong Tiago Pires, también ha sido otro protagonista del evento, llegando a cuartos de final. Este es el mejor resultado del portugués de lo que va de año.
