El Billabong Pipe masters es la última prueba del circuito mundial y a su vez forma parte del Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, que lo constituyen 3 eventos hawaianos, siendo este último el Billabong Pipeline Masters.

Billabong ha tenido un buen y largo impacto en la trayectoria profesional de surfing en el North Shore de Hawaii. Cuando el tour estaba pasando un mala racha durante los años 80, la compaÒÌa de surf anuncio la celebración del Billabong pro. Los premios aumentaron considerablemente existiendo un evento móvil desde Waimea hasta Sunset, con este formato se consiguiÛ el evento con las olas más impresionantes nunca vistas en la historia de la competición de la ASP.

The Pipe Masters was founded in 1971 by Hawaiian Fred Hemmings, (now a Hawaii State Senator) who is credited with developing Hawaii’s fledgling professional surfing scene. Contest Director Randy Rarick, who eventually took it over from Hemmings, still runs the event and has been it’s inspiration for over three decades.
Although Jeff Hakman won the inaugural competition, fellow Hawaiian Gerry
Lopez was riding the wave with such a casual elegance that the contest was
later named after him (Lopez was not present in 1971 having been duped by the crafty Corky Carroll into thinking the event had been cancelled). In 1972 and1973 Lopez won the event with a display of surfing so beautiful that it caused Jim McKay, the legendary ABC announcer, to wipe tears from his eyes … on air.

To the surfing world, a Pipe Masters title is the pinnacle of the
sport; an honored achievement that sets a surfer in a special elite class. Entire careers have been spawned out of riding the Pipeline. Surfers from dozens of countries travel here to prove their ability in the caverns of Pipe. Make your mark on this wave and go down in surfing lore.

The “Masters” stature grew quickly as the NY Times declared a huge day in the early years as “A day of days on earth.” Sports Illustrated published a cover story in 1982 called Thunder from the Seas. ABC’s Wide World of Sports featured the event for nearly a decade.

Pipeis held by many with as much reverence as the World Title itself. The history of the place, combined with the sheer ferocity of the wave, makes winning the Pipe Masters a career highlight. Great rivalries in the sport have had their most intense matches here, from the Mark Richards/Cheyne Horan duels of the early Eighties to the fiery clashes of Tom Curren/Mark Occhilupo and the all-time battles between World Champs Andy Irons and Kelly Slater for the last decade.

Although hosted by a slew of major brands over the years, the WCT event at Pipe was taken over by Billabong in 2007, promising to make it the premier Hawaiian event. This year is expected to be a banner season for surf on the North Shore, promising a spectacular experience for both spectator and contestant alike.

La salida al agua del surafricano puso el listón demasiado alto para Aritz, que surfeó en todo momento contra corriente. Emslie consiguió un 5,33 en la primera ola y un 8,30 en la segunda mientras que a Aritz le costó elegir la ola con la que poder lucirse.

A mitad de manga consiguió un esperanzador 6,17 pero sólo le acompañó con otro 5,23 antes del final. Sumó así una puntuación de 11,40, lejos de la de su rival. Sólo queda una prueba para que finalice la WCT, el Billabong Pipeline Masters, en Hawai, y Aranburu necesitará un gran resultado para no descender.

Después de un año histórico para el surf europeo en el 2008 que vio como cuatro de sus surferos se unían a la élite, el año que viene verá un nuevo record para un continente que se está convirtiendo en una potencia de este deporte con un total de siete competidores en el “Dream Tour”.

Con Jeremy Flores y Miky Picon habiéndose garantizado la reclasificación tras sus respectivos segundo y tercer puestos en Brasil, la presión estaba en aquellos que esperaban que le otorgasen un “wildcard” o conseguir grandes puntuaciones en el último evento del año.

El portugués Tiago Pires, que se encontraba en la posición 30 antes del evento de Pipeline, tenía una buena oportunidad de reclasificar directamente en el WCT con un buen resultado en Pipeline, pero desafortunadamente sufrio una lesión, teniendo que usar su puesto numero 13 en el WQS para asegurarse su permanencia en el Top 45 durante el 2009. Esto podría haber afectado al alemán Marlon Lipke ya que finalizó en el puesto 16 del ranking WQS, justo a las puertas de la clasificación para el Top 45, y esperaba que Pires obteniese un buen resultado en Pipeline y no tuviera y dejase su plaza en el WQS libre.

A pesar de que Pires no asistió al Bilabong Pipepline Masters, la ASP y la unión de surferos profesionales (WPS) le otorgó a Marlon Lipke la clasificación en el Top 45 uniéndose así a la tripulación europea más numerosa hasta ahora en el WCT.

Con los competidores del WQS Tim Boal, de Francia, que se garantizó el paso después de una impresionante campaña de verano, y el polinesio Michel Bourez que aseguró su pase al “Dream Tour” después de ganar el prestigioso WQS de 6 estrellas Reef Hawaiian Pro, el último hombre a la espera de su destino para el 2009 era el zarautztarra Aritz Aranburu.

Aranburu, que sufrió tres lesiones consecutivas durante el año de su estreno en el Top 45. terminó el año con una novena posición compartida en el Billabong Pipeline Masters, un último esfuerzo que convenció a la ASP y WPS para darle una segunda oportunidad como wildcard para demostrar que es capaz durante el 2009. Aranburu tuvo que esperar hasta el día final para conocer su destino para el siguiente año en el WCT.

Con siete hombres llevando la bandera Europea en el WCT durante el 2009, los europeos han dejado claro que lo que parecía un logro historico en el 2008 cuando cuatro hombres se clasificaron, era tan solo el inicio de una era que podría ver como un surfer europeo se convierte en campeón del WCT en el futuro.
